Official pricing is out for 2017 Chevrolet Bolt, and the much-anticipated EV will cost $37,495 to start. As your dealer will hasten to point out, most buyers will qualify for a $7500 federal tax credit, bringing the net cost down under $30K. That figure has been attached to the Bolt ever since a production version was announced, and it makes the Bolt the most affordable all-electric car with a 200-plus-mile range that isn't vaporware or delayed by one to two years.

Expect the first Bolt EVs to arrive before winter, with the majority of inventory sent to the West Coast and other EV-friendly states before eventually becoming available nationwide. That $37,495 is for the LT trim level, which includes 17-inch alloy wheels, xenon headlights, keyless entry and start, a 10.2-inch infotainment screen, an 8.0-inch digital instrument panel, a backup camera, and the usual power accessories.

The $41,780 Premier model adds fancier wheels, leather, front and rear heated seats, a heated steering wheel, 360-degree cameras, roof rails, a rearview mirror with a trick video overlay, turn signals on the side mirrors, and ambient lighting. Blind-spot monitoring and rear parking sensors with cross-traffic alert are also standard on the Premier-they're optional on the LT.

It's possible to further inflate the price with two Premier option packages. One adds an upgraded stereo, wireless device charging, and two more USB ports for the rear seat. The other packs added safety equipment, including forward-collision alert with auto braking and pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist, and auto high-beams.

That's a lot of money for a small hatchback (Chevrolet officially calls it a crossover), but we've verified that the Bolt can easily travel up to its 238-mile range-and possibly beyond-from our first drive. No other EV at this price level comes close.
